This tour explores two innovative social housing projects in Barcelona that reinterpret the urban fabric of the Eixample district through sustainable and community-oriented design.
The first building, developed by IMHAB in the 22@ district by Peris+Toral Arquitectes, features a layered residential program with elderly housing on upper floors, social rental units below, and temporary accommodation at street level. Organized around open-air internal walkways and bioclimatic patios, the design promotes natural light, ventilation, and social interaction. Shared amenities, such as urban gardens and communal laundry spaces, foster community among residents while enhancing environmental performance through passive climate strategies and mixed-material construction.
The second project, by SV60 Cordón & Liñán Arquitectos, emphasizes flexibility and integration with the surrounding city. Designed as a permeable, sculpted block with voids connecting facades and interior courtyards, it enhances natural ventilation and social connectivity without compromising privacy. A large, carved base resolves topographical challenges and frames a new public courtyard, linking the building to key public spaces nearby. Modular housing units allow adaptable living arrangements, while varied openings, terraces, and climatic galleries improve spatial quality and energy efficiency.
Together, these projects reflect Barcelona’s commitment to thoughtful, inclusive, and sustainable urban housing.
